TACOMA, Wash. -- Hundreds of local officials and school leaders will gather in Tacoma on Monday at a school safety forum.Organizers of the two-day event said they hope the gathering will generate ways to prevent campus violence, exchange ideas and develop action plans.School leaders said the Virginia Tech massacre, the deadly shooting at Tacoma's Foss high school and the murder of Rebecca Griego at the University of Washington have students, faculty, administrators and police looking for solutions. Emergency workers will also attend the statewide forum.Security experts will explain how to assess the risk of campus violence, how to develop security plans and how to intervene with people who have mental disorders. One way officials are preparing is with maps.Layouts of all Washington high schools are in a special database. State officials said that soon elementary and junior high schools will be mapped within the next year. Leaders said they wanted to meet now as opposed to waiting for another tragedy to happen.
