Families Targeted By Possible Cell Phone Hackers

Heather Kuykendall and Darci Price told police and their cell phone provider Sprint Nextell that someone seemed to have mysteriously taken control over their family’s cell phones and they were told it wasn’t possible.

“Friday they said, ‘It’s not possible. They can’t do what you say they are doing,’” Price said.

KIRO 7 Eyewitness News has learned that cell phone hacking is not only possible but it is not uncommon.

A group calling themselves Phone Phreaks has Web sites, discussion groups and a manual called, “The Cell Phone Hacker’s Bible.”

“How do you hack into a cell phone conversation?” one person asked in an online discussion.

“Basically total remote control of a cell and its settings and it’s network setting—full access and snooping power,” another person responded.

Kuykendall said whoever hacked her daughter Courtney’s phone has been sending cryptic threatening messages, accessed call lists and monitored conversations and even taken pictures through her phone.

“Her phone will be sitting on the table, not even touching it and it will be making calls. They’ve totally taken over her phone,” Kuykendall said.

"We are unaware of technology that would enable the activity portrayed in this story to occur, and we will support law enforcement as appropriate on investigating the issue," Caroline Semerdijian with Sprint Nextel said.
