A small plane crashed as its pilot was attempting to land at Paine Field in Everett on Monday morning, officials told KIRO 7 Eyewitness News. The pilot got out of the plane on his own and was taken to a hospital.

The Piper Cub crashed just before 7 a.m. in a heavily wooded area about a quarter to a half-mile north of the airport, Chopper 7 pilot Clark Stahl said.

Assistant Fire Chief Glen Martinsen said the pilot walked out of the area to get help and was taken by a Mukilteo Fire Department aid car to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.

Chopper 7 video showed firefighters and rescue personnel gathering near trees that obscured the wreckage.

Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Mike Fergus said the plane went down about 1,000 feet north of the runway.

The pilot was the only person on board and has not been identified. The plane is registered to a Seattle man, but it's unknown if he was the pilot.
