A body found in a burned-out taxi in SeaTac is being investigated as a homicide, sheriff's deputies said.

The body -- burned beyond recognition and found in the front seat area -- was discovered Tuesday morning in the cab near 38th Avenue South and 177th Street.

Firefighters were delayed because of overhead power lines, but they discovered the body when the fire was out and called deputies.

Authorities said they didn't know whether the body was that of the cab's driver. Other taxi drivers who gathered at the scene told KIRO 7 Eyewitness News that they believed the body was that of the cab's driver.

Shortly after 6 p.m. Tuesday, police issued a search warrant for the house where the taxi had been dispatched to. There was no immediate word on what investigators were looking for.

At least 25 other Far West and Yellow taxi drivers shook hands and looked solemn, mourning the death, said KIRO 7 Eyewitness News reporter Michelle Millman.

Some of the drivers told Millman they understood the driver for Far West taxi, a 41- or 42-year-old man, responded to a pickup call at 3:30 a.m. at the location where the cab was found. They said the man worked the overnight shift to raise money to visit his wife this summer in India.

Investigators are going door to door in the neighborhood, asking residents if they saw or heard what happened.
