Swimming Area Contaminated By Sewage Leak

Posted: 11:18 am PDT August 8, 2007Updated: 11:38 am PDT August 8, 2007

The Juanita Beach swimming area was closed Wednesday due to an unknown amount of sewage entering the city of Kirkland’s storm system, reported KIRO 7 Eyewitness News.

Officials said the leak was caused by a failure of a sewer line belonging to Lake Vue Gardens Convalescent Center on Northeast 120th Street.

Water samples taken from the beach and surrounding wetlands and streams were determined to have high levels of fecal coliform, making the swimming area potentially unsafe for swimming or wading, the city said.

Repair to the sewer line is under way and water quality is being monitored.

Officials said the beach will be closed until further notice.
