Seattle Man Allegedly Involved In Blackwater Killings

A Seattle man who used to work for Blackwater security in Iraq is accused of shooting and killing an Iraqi security guard. Experts said he probably will not face charges, reported KIRO 7 Eyewitness News.

That possibility is fueling a push for new federal legislation.

On Wednesday the U.S. House of Representatives will consider a bill that would give the federal government legal authority to charge security agents, contracted by the U.S., who commit crimes in other countries.

Wednesday morning, lawmakers discussed the recent violence involving Blackwater, the private security agency involved in a gunfight last month in which 11 Iraqis were killed.

Blackwater founder Erik Prince said his agents returned fire after they were fired upon.

On Tuesday, the former Green Beret answered questions at a Senate hearing, including ones about an incident involving a former Blackwater employee from Western Washington who allegedly shot and killed an Iraqi security guard.

According to a congressional report, Blackwater fired the agent and flew him back to the U.S. two days after the incident.

International law is unclear about whether contractors like the agent could be charged in such cases.

As a result, representatives are considering a House Bill that would extend the reach of the U.S. criminal court system to overseas and regulate the conduct of all U.S. contractors in Iraq, Afghanistan, and any future combat zone.

U.S. senators are also considering a similar bill that would establish a commission to investigate the extent of the government's reliance on contractors and the actions of those contractors.
