A Seattle police officer shot a teenager twice early Sunday after police say the teen reached for his cell phone.

Police told KIRO 7 that an officer on patrol spotted two teenagers acting suspiciously around 3 a.m. near 26th Avenue South and South Washington Street.

The teens ran from the officer but were stopped a few blocks away, police said.

The officer ordered both teens to put their hands in the air. The 14-year old teen complied, but the 13-year-old lifted his shirt and pulled out a black object from his pocket or waistband, police reported.

"The suspect lifted up his t-shirt and at the same time he pulled a black object out of his pocket," said Deputy Chief John Diaz, Seattle Police Department. "The officer sensing it was a weapon, believing it was a weapon, shot twice and hit the suspect in the leg."

Neighbors said there was no mistaking the gunfire they heard from this intersection.

"I know gunshots when I hear it," said Ron Burkes, who lives nearby. "I know a firecracker and I knew it was a gunshot, but I didn't get up because it's nothing new to me."

Medics took the wounded teen to Harborview Medical Center.

Police said that the officer has been placed on administrative leave.
