Bellevue police released video Friday to Eastside Bureau Chief Alison Grande from inside a special bait car used to catch car thieves in the act.

The red Honda Civic was left with the keys inside in a parking lot at Bellevue Community College last March.

Surveillance video from inside the car shows 29-year-old Jason Scott Collins entering the vehicle, at first trying to remove the stereo but then driving away in the car.

The company monitoring the bait car called Bellevue police, alerting officers that the car was been stolen.

Video showed Collins getting onto Interstate 90 and then Interstate 405. Detectives said he was speeding. Police said he had no idea he was being caught on camera.

Collins exited I-405 at 112th Ave Southeast then headed down a road that ended up being a dead end.

As motorcycle officers surrounded the car, Collins reacted by trying to run over them.

A motorcycle officer fired at the car, his bullet grazing the car’s windshield.

Police had the monitoring company shut off the car and seconds later Collins discovered he was locked inside.

Collins pleaded guilty to assault, theft and possession of stolen property on Thursday.
