Police Searching For Missing Basketball Player In Brazil

Former Washington State basketball player Tony Harris is missing in Formosa, Brazil, his family told KIRO 7 Eyewitness News.

“He was concerned for his life, he was worried. He just wanted to get back home,” Brian Stewart, Harris’ cousin, said.

Harris, 36, had gone to Brazil on Oct. 31 after being called up to play on a team that was headed to the championships.

On Nov. 4, Harris, a former Washington State guard and Garfield High School graduate, told his wife, Lori, he was having trouble with his team and his personal paperwork.

“The team had the visa and he was a little concerned for his life, and his wife made reference to him to go to the U.S. Embassy, and if they wouldn’t give him a visa they would give him an emergency visa,” Stewart said.

According to his family, Harris never went to the embassy.

Harris’ family has been trying to get help from the U.S. Embassy and local police in Formosa where Harris was last seen.

“I feel really stuck. I feel frustrated. Every time I talk to the embassy in Rio then they have to talk to the consulate in Brasilia,” Lori Harris said.

“Whoever’s the US consulate down there needs to get up off his butt and get out there and put more an emphasis on what’s going on, and get out there and try to find him,” Stewart said.

According to Stewart, Harris is fluent in the language spoken in Brazil but is not familiar with the area where he was last seen.

Harris has played basketball all over the world and went back to Brazil to earn extra money for his family.

Harris’ wife is pregnant and is due in three weeks.

“Whatever he touches is really golden, that just goes into what type of individual that he is as a person and I love him and I miss him and I want him home,” Stewart said.

Stewart told KIRO 7 Eyewitness News Harris is a family guy and would never be out of touch with his family for this long.

Harris’ wife has been on the phone trying to reach Washington lawmakers and the Federal Bureau of Investigation and has just learned that police are going to search areas in Goiania where Harris might have been spotted days ago.

“We do believe God is watching over him and is going to get him home,” Harris said.

Harris' mom, Ophelia, is frustrated with the American officials in Brazil and the basketball team that Tony said was holding his visa.

“Passion, concern, if it was your child, how would you like us to treat your child?” Ophelia said.
