MASON COUNTY -- Police received reports of an unresponsive man in a car that traveled 500 to 600 feet over an embankment on a forest service road near the Lilliwaup Creek Campground on Hood Canal Friday.

Detective Dean Byrd of the Mason County Sheriff's Office said the car's location is extremely difficult to access because the terrain is steep and dangerous.

A rescue effort is in progress from local fire and rescue crews. Several helicopters have been brought in, in an effort to better see the location of the car. It is not known if the driver survived.
