Web Chat Could Exonerate Knox In Italy Slaying

Posted: 7:39 am PST November 23, 2007

A British newspaper said a Web chat involving a recently-arrested suspect in Meredith Kercher’s slaying may reveal new insight into the case and possible exonerate Amanda Knox, the Seattle woman who is a suspect in the Perugia, Italy, killing of her British roommate.

The Daily Star said that in a Web chat with a friend that police were monitoring, Rudy Hermann Guede admitted to sleeping with Kercher, but claimed a stranger actually slashed her throat.

“I remember having sex with Meredith, she was the one who invited me over. After that, I went to the bathroom and heard the doorbell. Then I heard Meredith screaming. I had a fight with this young guy, I was hurt as well, but I cannot remember his face exactly. I left after that. I was scared. I did not kill her,” said Guede in a Web chat with a friend.

Guede also said in the chat that Knox was not in the cottage on the night Kercher was killed.

Despite initial claims from authorities that there wasn't a fourth suspect in the case, a British newspaper suggested that investigators may have been tracking the Ivory-Coast native all along.

Guede became the latest focus for police trying to solve the Nov. killing following his arrest in Germany on Nov. 20.

He was allegedly involved in the drug trade and lived near Perugia cottage where Kercher was found slain in the home she shared with University of Washington student Knox.

Published reports said that in a rambling four-page statement to police, Knox admitted to smoking marijuana on the night of the killing and said she did not remember where she was.
