Flooding Closes I-5 In Lewis County

Posted: 7:52 am PST December 3, 2007Updated: 5:43 pm PST December 3, 2007

The state Department of Transportation reports all lanes of Interstate 5 near Centralia are closed.

Spokeswoman Claudia Cornish said the closure could last at least 36 hours.

Cornish said it's the first complete freeway closure due to flooding in the area in 11 years.

High winds, heavy rains, mudslides and falling trees made for hectic travel on highways across Western Washington. Westbound Interstate 90 closed Monday afternoon near Ellensburg at about 1 p.m. for a snowslide and reopened at 2:42 p.m.

US 2 at Stevens Pass was closed at 6:45 a.m. due to avalanche danger and could remain so until 6 p.m or later. Snow, freezing rain and treacherous icy road conditions west of the summit make travel unsafe. Avalanche control technicians will determine when the highway can be safely reopened. US 2 is closed from MP 57, six miles west of the summit to Leavenworth at milepost 99.

Several routes are blocked in King County Monday including:

  • Westbound SR 522 at SR 9 is closed due to water on the roadway.
  • Eastbound SR 522 at SR 202 is closed due to water on the roadway.
  • On-ramp from Boeing Access Road to northbound I-5 is closed due to water on the ramp.
  • Northbound I-405 near SR 527 has water over the roadway. Traffic is moving slowly on this section of the highway.
