How Storm Victims Can Get Help

POSTED: 11:15 am PST December 6, 2007
UPDATED: 10:35 am PST December 10, 2007

If your home, business or property has been damaged in this week’s storms, Insurance Commissioner Mike Kreidler advises consumers in such situations to first assess their property damage, then take photos or a video of the damage.

If you have questions about what damage is covered, contact your agent or insurance company as soon as possible.

Flood victims seeking help from the Federal Emergency Management Agency can call 1-800-621-FEMA to register for assistance. You also can register online at www.fema.gov.

Officials recommend calling your local county emergency management department for additional information on filing claims and disaster assistance.

Here are some other tips for people who need help following a flood:

  • The American Red Cross can help you by providing you with a voucher to purchase new clothing, groceries, essential medications, bedding, essential furnishings, and other items to meet emergency needs.

  • The Red Cross can provide you with a cleanup kit: mop, broom, bucket, and cleaning supplies.

  • Contact your insurance agent to discuss claims.

  • Listen to your radio for information on assistance that may be provided by the state or federal government or other organizations. County emergency management numbers can be found in the box on this page.

  • If you hire cleanup or repair contractors, be sure they are qualified to do the job. Be wary of people who drive through neighborhoods offering help in cleaning up or repairing your home. Check references.

If you live in Seattle and have been left homeless because of the storm or if you need other storm-related assistance, the number to call is 206-684-3000. Operators are available to help residents from 7:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. through Friday.
