Snow Falls Over Much Of Washington

SEATTLE -- Freezing rain, snow and snow mixed with rain fell over much of Washington early Tuesday, including the Seattle area, with snow accumlations up to 3 inches near Bremerton, 2 inches near Shelton and 1 inch near Snohomish.KIRO 7 Eyewitness News meteorologist Rick VanCise said much of the snow turned to rain Tuesday morning in the low-lying areas in the western part of the state while a snow-rain mix continued to fall in Snohomish County, snarling traffic in the morning commute.

A number of school districts reported closures or delays. Get the latest details here.In Skagit County Tuesday morning, road crews closed both directions of state Route 20 at Mile Post 90 just east of Concrete due to a mudslide.

State Department of Transportation maintenance crews are beginning cleanup efforts. Rockport, Marblemount and other towns and areas east of the slide can still be reached by alternative routes.

Heavy snow warnings were issued for the Cascade Range and most areas to the east. The 1 to 2 feet of snow is expected to fall in the Cascades and up to a foot and a half in the eastern foothills by Wednesday morning with gusty winds making driving hazardous in the passes.A stretch of Interstate 90 east of Snoqualmie Pass was closed at 5 a.m. Tuesday for avalanche control but reopened about 40 minutes later.Chains are required for all vehicles heading eastbound on Snoqualmie Pass except for those with all wheel drive, while traction tires are required in the westbound direction.

In the Spokane area, the forecast is for 4 to 7 inches of snow in town and 6 to 10 inches in the mountains. Ellensburg also is expected to get 4 to 7 inches with 3 to 5 in Yakima and the lower Yakima Valley.
