Man In Alleged 'Capt. Jack Sparrow' Break-In Attempt Charged

Police said a man who acknowledged he was the person in a surveillance video that showed him trying to break into a coffee shop turned himself in to authorities Tuesday night and was charged Thursday afternoon, reported KIRO 7 Eyewitness News.

James Brandon D’Angelo was charged with attempted second-degree burglary and third-degree malicious mischief.

According to investigators, D’Angelo surrendered to police after he was called by a girlfriend who said she saw him on the news in a surveillance video, in which the coffee shop owner had added a “Capt. Jack Sparrow" narration.

Crimestoppers of Pierce County said they received numerous tips following the KIRO 7 Eyewitness News story that included a broadcast of the video and information about a reward in the case.

According to police reports, D’Angelo later saw the KIRO story then went to the Pierce County Jail in Tacoma. Once he was near the jail, he flagged down a police officer and told him he was on the news, wanted for trying to break into a Lakewood coffee shop.

Police documents said D’Angelo claimed he was so intoxicated during the attempted break-in that he didn’t remember the incident.

D’Angelo was booked into the jail early Wednesday for investigation of second-degree burglary, first-degree malicious mischief and failure to appear on a third-degree theft charge that is apparently unrelated.

The owner of the coffee shop said he posted the humorous video in hopes that someone would recognize the would-be burglar, who was dressed similar to the character from the "Pirates of the Caribbean" movies.

The video shows D’Angelo unsuccessfully trying to kick down a door and smash windows to get inside Perk Central Coffee in November while the narrator speaks in a “Capt. Jack Sparrow” pirate voice.

The video ends with the D’Angelo writhing in pain after he runs into the coffee shop's door with his foot extended.

Police said D’Angelo suffered a dislocated knee from the incident but has not received medical treatment for the injury.

A judge set D’Angelo’s bail at $5,000.
