Police Arrest Suspect In Capitol Hill Stabbing

Posted: 2:45 pm PST January 25, 2008Updated: 5:18 pm PST January 25, 2008

According to Seattle police, they have arrested a suspect in the stabbing death of 31-year-old Shannon Harps in Seattle’s Capitol Hill neighborhood on New Year’s Eve.

Shannon Harps, an organizer with the Sierra Club, was killed outside her apartment building on Capitol Hill.

Seattle police announced Friday that they have arrested 48-year-old James A. Williams of Seattle in connection with Harps' slaying.

According to police, Williams’ DNA matched DNA found at the scene.

Williams has been in custody since Jan. 16 for violation of his probation, police said.

According to Department of Corrections records, Williams was on probation for first-degree assault with a deadly weapon stemming from a January 1995 offense, KIRO 7 Eyewitness News reported.

Friday’s arrest comes days after Seattle police announced a 29-year-old man who was considered a person of interest was not connected to the case and would be released.

Authorities conducted forensic testing on evidence gathered at the scene, but there was not enough information to arrest the 29-year-old man who resembled a composite sketch of the killer.

“At this point the forensic evidence that we’ve analyzed and the investigative efforts to date have not given us enough information to make an arrest in this case,” Sgt. Deanna Nollette with Seattle police said about the 29-year-old man Wednesday.

That man was arrested several days after the stabbing for allegedly violating his parole by drinking alcohol and was held for nearly three weeks.

The man is a convicted felon and has a history of violence against women.

Seattle police are holding a 4 p.m. press conference to discuss the arrest. Watch KIRO 7 Eyewitness at 5 p.m. and check back with kirotv.com for the latest information.
