Thurston County prosecutors have filed criminal charges against the manager of a Lacey-based funeral home for allegedly stealing more than $1 million that was supposed to be used for funerals and to care for and maintain burial plots.

Prosecutors said that instead of taking care of the dead, 38-year-old Joe Burgman used the money to live a lavish lifestyle.

Burgman is now facing numerous charges of first-degree theft, second-degreet theft and unlawful use of criminal proceeds.

According to court documents obtained by KIRO-TV, Burgman, who manages the Lacey based Woodlawn-Forest Funeral Homes and Cemeteries allegedly began stealing money in 2001. Prosecutors said he’s stolen $1.4 million from a trust paid by customers for the upkeep and care of their gravesites. Burgman is also accused of stealing an additional $450,000 from the cemetery corporation.

The cemetery is owned by Joe Burgman’s parents, Tim and Ann Burgman, who are considered victims in this case. Ann Burgman has served as a Lacey City Councilwoman since 1994.

Prosecutors said the alleged theft came to light and was investigated by the Washington state Patrol after a tip provided by Joe Burgman’s ex-wife.
