SEATTLE -- Washington State Ferries has put the ferry Chinook up for sale on eBay. [See listing]

The 143-foot-long passenger-only ferry is listed with a starting bid of $4.5 million.

The ferry system was ordered to sell both the Chinook and the Snohomish when the Legislature decided to pull out of the foot-ferry business.Proceeds from the sale are slated to go to counties who want to start or restore passenger ferry routes.

The Chinook, which was built in 1998, ran the passenger ferry route between Bremerton and Seattle with a capacity of 350 people until it was taken out of service in 2003.

This is the second time the state has sold a ferry on eBay. The ferry Tyee was sold in 2003 for $560,000.

The eBay listing said the Chinook’s sister ship, the Snohomish, will be sold at a future date, as it is currently being used for temporary ferry service.

The ferry system said the boats are virtually identical.
