Andy Wappler Leaving KIRO-TV For Puget Sound Energy

Posted: 6:37 pm PST February 15, 2008

Andy Wappler, KIRO 7's Chief Meteorologist, is leaving the station after 14 years to join Puget Sound Energy, where he will promote the company's renewable energy and conservation efforts.

Wappler, who started in 1994 as a weekend forecaster on the weather team led by his father, Harry Wappler, became Chief Meteorologist after Harry left the station in 2002.

Wappler will be a senior public relations consultant at Bellevue-based PSE, the Northwest's largest utility, and will communicate the company's work on alternative energy sources and energy conservation plans.

"As a meteorologist, it’s clear to me climate change is real and that we are seeing its impact right here in our region,” Wappler said in a news release issued by the station. “There are steps we can all take today to be a part of the solution, and I’m excited to help people learn what they can do.”

Wappler said his family has cut electricity consumption at home by 40 percent.

“Andy’s experience and reputation are ideal for his new position,” said Eric Lerner, KIRO-TV vice president and general manager. “Northwest audiences already regard him as an expert in the field of weather. We will miss him at the station and know we will continue to work together to inform our community about the changing weather patterns and how to adjust for them.”

Wappler said he first visited KIRO-TV as a preschooler in 1969, when his father began work at the station.

“I was only 4 when my dad started at KIRO, so the station will always be a part of my life,” he said. “Likewise, I will continue to be a part of the Northwest community. I thank my colleagues and the people of this area for their friendship and support throughout the years.”
