Pierce County detectives have recovered the car and identified a person of interest in the hit-and-run of a 66-year-old woman in Fircrest Sunday.

“We do have the vehicle and we believe we know who was driving it. We still have some work to do, so we have not made an arrest yet. But we’re going to get our information, put it together and get it to the prosecutor,” Detective Ed Troyer said.

Law enforcement sources told KIRO 7 Eyewitness News reporter Kevin McCarty, that the person driving was an 18-year-old woman.

Investigators have turned information over to the prosecutor's office for review. An arrest could be made soon depending on that decision.

Valerie Johnston was riding her bicycle at about 5:30 a.m. Sunday morning when neighbors say she was struck by a car that ran a stop sign in Fircrest.

“The driver got out of the vehicle, drug her to the side of the road and moved the bike, then fled the scene,” Detective Ed Troyer with the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department said.

Johnston was found by a jogger about 10 minutes later, police said.

Nobody saw the car hit Johnston but nearby residents heard the impact from inside their homes.

Investigators used debris left at the scene to indicate the car that hit Johnston was a maroon Mercedes-Benz.

Family members allegedly notified investigators through their lawyers that they owned the car sought in the hit-and-run, KIRO 7 Eyewitness News reported.
