Men Say Police Ignoring Attack By Armed Thugs

POSTED: 7:49 am PST February 29, 2008
UPDATED: 8:56 am PST February 29, 2008

Two men said they were attacked by a group of armed men in Ravensdale and then ignored by the King County Sheriff's Office when they reported the assault, reported KIRO 7 Eyewitness News.

The assault happened on public land known as the Ravensdale Flats, near Maple Valley about a week ago.

Phillip Kennedy said he and three friends were just leaving the area in their vehicles after target shooting, when a group of men approached them, using flashlights to blind them and get them to stop.

Kennedy said at first he thought the men were police officers.

Kennedy and Rodney O’Hair said about a dozen men, some with shotguns, surrounded them and complained about people shooting in the flats.

“They came up over the hill and one man told me to lay faced down on the ground and I said, ‘Look, man, no one's laying on the ground, we didn't do anything wrong.’ And then I got a shotgun handle to the head and I’m bleeding all over the place,” said Kennedy.

Kennedy said he and O’Hair were keenly aware that they were in a remote area.

“I thought they were going to shoot us,” said O’Hair.

“Then he stepped on my back and dragged my friend over, hit him in the back of the head twice and then shot off a round in the dirt right next to our heads,” said Kennedy.

Kennedy said the group ordered them off the property and shot at them as they drove off.

Kennedy later had 10 stitches in his head.

The men said they reported the attack to the sheriff’s office but haven’t heard anything. Officers have not yet taken a statement from O’Hair.

“When you’re an innocent bystander and you’re not doing anything wrong, and someone just comes up and assaults you with firearms, holds you at gunpoint and tells you to lay faced down on the ground, you expect police officers are going to do something to catch the people,” said Kennedy.

The detective on the case told KIRO he hasn’t done any follow-up on the incident because he’s been working on a murder that occurred the next day and the department is very short-staffed.
