Jewelers Chase Down, Tackle Watch Thief

The owner of an Aberdeen jewelry store said he and a store employee stopped a man who tried to run out of the store with an expensive watch.

Police said the man took two watches worth several thousand dollars at another jewelry store just before heading to another jewelry store down the street.

Store owner Robin Wilson said he was concerned as soon as the man walked into Bryan's and Son's Jewelers. Wilson said the man asked to try on several Rolex watches, one worth $9,000 and another worth $6,000.

Surveillance video showed Wilson trying to stay near the store’s front door in case the man tried to run.

Eventually, the man did run out of the store with a $6,000 watch. Store video showed the store owner slipping and the jeweler jumping over him to chase the thief out the door.

The men caught the thief five blocks away and wrestled him to the ground.

“He wanted to run, so we had to hold him down,” said jeweler Matt Towle.

Police are crediting the men with catching the thief.

“Obviously, I’m not going to tell anybody to go out there and put themselves in harm’s way, but they did help clear the case,” said Sergeant C.J. Chastain of the Aberdeen Police Department.

Detectives said the man will probably be charged with theft in the first degree.
