Cigar Bars, Stores Trying For Smoking Ban Exemption

UPDATED: 5:12 pm PDT March 20, 2008

Local cigar enthusiasts are collecting signatures for an initiative that would exempt cigar bars and cigar stores from the state's indoor smoking ban.

The newly formed Cigar Association of Washington is one of the supporters of Initiative 1016, the Cigar Bar Relief Act.

The initiative would alter the indoor smoking ban to allow smoking in cigar shops, cigar bars and private clubs.

DISCUSS: Smoking Ban Initiative

In 2005, 63 percent of Washington’s voters approved a ban on smoking within 25 feet of the entrance of any workplace.

The American Cancer Society said the private club exemption in the initiative could undo key parts of the law.

The cigar industry said the private club exemption is designed for places like the Elks Club or the American Legion.

Supporters have until the end of June to gather 225,000 signatures to qualify for the November ballot.
