The Waste Management truck went out of control on North 85th Street just after 7 a.m., knocking down a street light and a tree just west of Greenwood Avenue North.

Firefighters swarmed the scene, prying and cutting the crushed metal until they could free the trapped driver.

"They're pulling out all the stops, trying to get that driver out," said Chopper 7 pilot Clark Stahl during live coverage on KIRO 7 Eyewitness News at 8 a.m.

The driver suffered serious leg injuries but would survive, officials said.

Five other Waste Management trucks arrived at the scene.

North 85th Street was closed during the incident.
