Body Found In Bombed, Burned Pierce County Home

PIERCE COUNTY, Wash. -- Investigators found the body of a man in the charred rubble of a Pierce County house that was destroyed by an explosion and fire early Tuesday morning.Officials said the man who was killed, Zane Dittman, had been building bombs in the house in the South Hill area outside of Puyallup.

Pierce County Sheriff's Office spokesman Ed Troyer said when other residents called deputies Monday night, Dittman fled upstairs and moments later a blast blew off the top floor.No one else was injured, but debris showered deputies nearly 100 yards away.Dittman, 26, was a registered sex offender who rented a room in the home from a couple. They had returned from a trip when they found he had changed the locks, was drinking and working on a bomb.The couple called 911 at about midnight. Deputies said that as they responded, Dittman went upstairs with a duffle bag full of explosives and turned on some loud heavy metal music. Soon after, an explosion blew off the top of the house and fire engulfed the home, Troyer said.Firefighters let the fire burn because of the risk of more explosions and a fear of booby-traps. Deputies evacuated four nearby homes while the fire burned.Homeowner Sean Remlick said he rented the room to Dittman who responded to an ad Remlick posted on the Craigslist Web site. Remlick said he was unaware that Dittman was a level one sex offender or had served time in jail.
