A May Day march in Olympia on Thursday erupted in violence and vandalism, reported KIRO 7 Eyewitness News.

The march started out peacefully with about 150 walking through the downtown area.

According to police, as protesters headed to the state's Capitol building, a pair of windows were shattered at a bank.

Once at the Capitol, demonstrators scrawled anarchist symbols on the walls outside Gov. Chris Gregoire's office.

Protesters wrestled, cursed and spit at police as officers tried to arrest a woman, and officers used pepper spray in an attempt to control the crowd.

Olympia police arrested six people who could be charged with felonies. They are expected to make court appearances on Friday.

A group endorsed by a number of organizations had a permit to rally at a park downtown and march to the Capitol, calling for immigrant rights and an end to the war in Iraq.
