An Amtrak train hit and killed a pedestrian near Emerald Downs in Auburn, said police.

An adult white male was talking on his cell phone while walking between the tracks northbound in the 1200 to 1400 block of C Street Northwest in Auburn, according to police.

The victim, identified as 50-year-old Juan Martinez from Renton, died of blunt force trama, said the medical examiner.

The train, also traveling northbound at approximately 80 mph, sounded the horn to warn the subject and attempted to apply the emergency brake but could not avoid hitting the subject who apparently did not hear the train, said police.

Police said traffic is not affected and Auburn Police will be conducting an investigation for the next several hours.

On April 21, 2008, 17-year-old Angela Rodriguez was also struck by an Amtrak train as she was crossing the tracks, said Kent police. Witnesses said she was talking on her cell phone.
