SPANAWAY, Wash. -- A head-on crash involving a pickup truck and school bus in Spanaway killed the pickup truck driver, said police. No students were on the bus.

The accident happened at 224th Street East and 50th Avenue East in Spanaway.

The pickup truck hit the bus at a high rate of speed, said Detective Ed Troyer from the Pierce County Sheriff's Office. The pickup truck driver was reported to have been passing cars when it hit the bus.

Police said no children were on the Bethel school bus. The school bus driver is shaken up, but not injured, said Troyer.

Chopper 7 showed the front end of the bus is smashed. The pickup truck is split into two.

Fire and aid units were on the scene.
