A 20-year-old man was fatally stabbed during a fight on a Bellingham street Sunday afternoon after an apparent incident of road rage, police said.

Police said witnesses reported that David L. Datskiy, 20, of Mount Vernon, and his passenger pulled their vehicle over on James Street, and another vehicle pulled up beside them.

Datskiy and the other driver got out of their vehicles, argued and exchanged punches before the second driver stabbed Datskiy and then fled from the scene.

Steve Ensmingre told KIRO 7 Eyewitness News that he was taking a walk with friends in the neighborhood when he said he saw a man in a white Cadillac pull over on his normally quiet street and loudly confront two men getting out of a Honda.

"The guy in the white Cadillac looked like he punched him. He just kind of jabbed at him," Ensmingre said.

He said he saw Datskiy slump over. Datskiy was struggling in the middle of the street. Then, the young man who had just stabbed Datskiy got in his Cadillac and drove right past the witnesses, the witness said.

"As he rounded the corner, he waved at us. We got a good look at him, he just waved at us and took off."

Ensmingre saw Datskiy climb into the passenger seat of the Honda.

"The victim got into a car and drove by, and I asked the guy who was with him who was driving the vehicle, 'How's he doing?' He said, 'He's going to be OK,' and he's not," Ensmingre said.

Datskiy was taken to St. Joseph Hospital, where he died.

Police are looking for the assailant, who is described as a white man in his 20s, 5 feet 8 inches tall, with a medium build, bald head, no facial hair, and wearing a blue shirt and black pants.
