Car Launching Into Sound Caught On Camera

TACOMA, Wash. -- The final seconds of a police chase that ended with a stolen car launching into the waters of Puget Sound was recorded by surveillance cameras Saturday night.According to police, the incident began around 11 p.m. when the Tacoma police stopped the driver of a stolen car who then fled from police.The driver led police on a high-speed chase through the streets of Tacoma.Police said Jonathan Coggins made a turn at what he thought was a street but was actually a boat launch at the Narrows Marina near Day Island.Video showed the car sailing through the air over a boat ramp and then landing with a splash in the water.Surveillance cameras showed a man waving officers toward the crash and the flashlights of police searching the water.Coggins was able to free himself but his passenger remained trapped in the car for nearly 30 minutes before he was rescued.
