Seattle Gas Leak Displaces 150 Residents

SEATTLE -- Around 150 people were displaced from four buildings near the University of Washington after a natural gas leak in Seattle.Crews were called to the 4700 block of 17th Avenue Northeast around 8:45 a.m Friday after a contractor was working on the heating system for a swimming pool at a fraternity house at the UW."In an attempt to shut off the gas, the shutoff valve snapped off," said Battalion Chief Mark Larsen of the Seattle Fire Department.College students told KIRO-7 they were awakened by firefighters in full gear Friday morning as two fraternity houses and two other apartments were evacuated."He had his oxygen tanks on, he was right in my room, woke me up on the couch. I was a little shocked," said Ben Sedenquist, a Phi Kappa Sigma fraternity member.Puget Sound Energy crews had to jackhammer through concrete to get to the gas line to cap it. The gas was turned off around 10:20 a.m.There are no reports of any injuries.
