TACOMA, Wash. -- A 71-year-old man pulled from a burning home in Tacoma was listed in serious condition on Friday, the News Tribune of Tacoma reported.

Neighbors tried to rescue the man, but they were turned back by locked doors and smoke coming from the home after the fire broke out Thursday morning, said KIRO 7 Eyewitness News reporter Kevin McCarty.

The newspaper said the man was first taken to St. Joseph Medical Center in Tacoma in critical condition and was later moved to Virginia Mason Hospital in Seattle.
