Residents Stay Despite Order To Leave Motel

Some residents of a north Seattle motel remained in their units Monday despite a state order to shut the business down because of health and fire code violations.

Residents of the Green Lake Motel on Aurora Avenue North near North 88th Street told KIRO 7 Eyewitness News reporter Jeff Dubois that they have nowhere to go and no intention of leaving, despite the order to leave by midnight Sunday.

"We're not going anywhere. We have nowhere else to go," said one resident, who was not identified.

Dubois said he saw filthy mattresses, exposed wiring and bugs in cupboards. Inspectors also found mold growing in some of the units.

The motel has 10 days to request a hearing and 28 days to contest the Health Department's findings.

An inspector is expected to come to the motel Monday morning to see whether the 39-unit motel is still occupied.

A motel manager, who was still living there Monday, had no comment.

The Department of Health said the business was licensed as a motel and the property owners were not licensed to have extended-stay units or apartments, so a 30-day eviction notice was not required to be given to residents.

Resident Beverly Veal said she had lived at the motel for 24 years.

The Department of Health said it's up to the owners to evict the residents.
