Students Beaten, Bloodied In Spanaway 'Fight Club'

Posted: 5:44 pm PDT May 19, 2008Updated: 11:16 am PDT May 20, 2008

Students from Spanaway Lake High School have been engaging in extreme fighting at random spots around Pierce County that often leaves the participants bruised, battered, and bloodied, reported KIRO 7 Eyewitness News.

The kids call it a "fight club," after the movie of the same name.

The students engage in hand-to-hand combat surrounded by crowds of cheering kids.

Spanaway Lake senior Kylee Fox said she's seen the fights, and KIRO 7 reporter Chris Egert said it appeared that most of the other students at the school also knew about the club's existence.

DISCUSS: Should Fighting Be Allowed?

According to students, the club meets every Friday. The location is determined at the last minute to keep it a secret.

Everyone, no matter size or sex, can fight.

One senior, who declined to be identified, said he's fought in the club. He downplayed the risks, but admitted to Egert that parents would not be happy if they knew about the club.

KIRO took a video of the fights found on the Web site Youtube to the Pierce County Sheriff's office.

Sheriff's spokesman Ed Troyer said they will work with the school to break up the clubs and said police were concerned that smaller, younger kids may be forced into fighting.

Investigators said it was possible that charges could be filed against some fight club members, especially since some of the fights took place in public parks.

The principal at Spanaway Lake said that to her knowledge, the fights weren't happening on campus and that the school resource officer will get involved.
