Posted: 6:08 pm PDT May 22, 2008Updated: 5:03 pm PDT May 24, 2008

The man shot and killed by bail bond agents Thursday in Lakewood has been identified by police as 34-year-old Roberto Roque.

Lakewood police said Roque was fatally shot as four bail bond agents, hired by Liberty Bail Bonds, tried to apprehend him near the intersection of Pacific Highway Southwest and 47th Avenue Southwest.

KIRO 7 has learned that Roque was also one of two suspects in a March burglary at Liberty's Tacoma's offices.

The bail bond agents tracked Roque to a Lakewood car lot to take him into custody for jumping bail on several outstanding criminal charges.

"He drove backwards, backed into one of the recovery agents vehicles and quickly accelerated forward at that time, their statement said that they were kind of fearful for their safety, so it looks like two of the recovery agents fired at him," Lt. Dave Guttu of the Lakewood police.

Roque later at Tacoma General Hospital. It was unclear whether he was armed.

Tacoma police confirm Roque was arrested along with Liberty employee Shelby King for a break in that took place March 31st of this year.

King, a former Liberty employee, pleaded guilty to allegations she arranged for the man to steal several thousand dollars in cash along with half a dozen bond certificates from Liberty's offices.

Roque was not charged because he co-operated with police providing evidence against King.

Police are questioning the four bond agents, as well as two witnesses.

No arrests have been made, said Guttu. The case will be forwarded to prosecutors who will decide whether to file charges or not.
