Jury Divided On 14 Of 15 Counts In Haq Trial

A King County Superior Court jury in Seattle said Monday it can only come to agreement on one part of one of the 15 charges in the trial of the man who shot up a Jewish Federation office two years ago. The jury is deciding whether Naveed Haq will go to a prison or a mental hospital. The 32-year-old Tri-Cities man pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity to murder, attempted murder and other charges.

Prosecutors asked that jurors keep deliberating after they said they could not decide whether Haq was sane or insane at the time of the shootings.

Monday was the sixth day of deliberations. Prosecutors said it was their position that after nearly six full weeks of testimony they believed the jurors should deliberate further.

The judge said she would not declare a mistrial.

A mental health expert who testified for the defense says Haq thought he was on a mission from God and unable to tell right from wrong when he shot up the office in July 2006. The prosecutor's expert agrees Haq has mental problems but knew what he was doing.

The case went to the jury May 23.
