SEATAC, Washington -- Nine patients were taken to local hospitals Thursday evening as the result of a carbon monoxide poisoning in the city of SeaTac.Multiple agencies responded to the 4800 block of South 172nd Street in SeaTac just before 8 p.m.At the scene they found six victims of carbon monoxide poisoning. Police and neighbors told KIRO TV that a man, his wife, and their son were inside the home, overcome by carbon monoxide.Three additional victims were found outside the home, and three King County sheriff's deputies were also overcome by fumes when responding.Police said a cab driver came home Thursday evening and left his car running in a closed garage. The man and his wife were at first the only ones home.Friends of the couple said that at 7:30 p.m. the couple's 23-year-old son came home and was quickly overcome by the fumes."The son came in the home. He said his mom and dad were on the ground so he called his relatives. I think he called 911 maybe, too. I don't know about that but he called my home. My wife answered the phone and nobody talked," said friend and neighbor Parawinder Singh. The son apparently had called relatives who came to check on the family. That woman and her two children were also overcome by fumes, police said.A short time later, sheriff's deputies arrived, and they, too, began to feel ill from the carbon monoxide.Harborview Medical Center is treating seven of the victims. Three people who were in critical condition have been upgraded to serious condition. One other person is listed in serious condition. The three police officers are all in satisfactory condition. The other two patients are being treated at Virginia Mason Hospital in Seattle where they have a hyperbaric chamber to treat the poisoning.
