A Chinook helicopter from the Fort Lewis Army base rescued two injured hikers who were trapped since Monday on Mount Rainier.

They were taken to Madigan Hospital at Fort Lewis for treatment and are expected to arrive at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle at 10 a.m.

A third member of their party died after being caught in a blizzard. The victim was the husband of a woman in the hiking party who survived along with another man.

The two survivors are from Bellevue and are both in their 30s. They are suffering from frostbite and hypothermia, but are expected to be OK.

Park ranger Kevin Bacher said the chopper left Camp Muir at about 6:15 a.m. Wednesday.

The three in the hiking party went for a day hike on Monday and became trapped in a storm on the Muir snowfield at about 10,000 feet. Two feet of snow fell overnight Monday.

The hikers called for help at 3:30 a.m. but rescuers were not able to immediately reach them due to severe weather conditions.

By 7:15 a.m. Tuesday, one hiker was able to reach Camp Muir and led rescuers to the other members in the party.

By the time crews were able to reach the other hikers, one was unconscious and died from exposure.
