Dog Bites Girl At Elementary School Playground

Posted: 4:00 pm PDT June 17, 2008Updated: 6:44 pm PDT June 17, 2008

A dog bit a girl at the playground of Lafayette Elementary School in West Seattle Tuesday morning, causing a minor injury and sending the school into a temporary lockdown.

School district maintenance workers fought off the dog -- a pit bull or pit bull mix -- until they could get the child to safety. She suffered a bite to the ankle and was back in school later in the morning, school officials said.

Ann Graves of Seattle Animal Control said officials believe the dog followed students to the school.

The dog had no identification tag or microchip, and it will be quarantined for 10 days if its owner doesn't come forward, Graves said.

She said it is too soon to determine whether the dog will be euthanized.
