A historic 133-foot sailboat ran aground in the San Juan Islands Monday, and a Washington ferry helped remove 27 people who were on board, the Coast Guard told KIRO 7 Eyewitness News.

The Adventuress, a 95-year-old two-masted, gaff-rigged schooner, ran aground in Wasp Passage between Orcas and Shaw islands at about noon during a school trip with 15 passengers and 12 crew members aboard, the Coast Guard said. The agency will conduct an investigation into what caused the grounding.

Washington state ferries Sealth and Evergreen, both with passengers aboard, responded to the boat.

"The captain of Sealth saw it himself and immediately reported that a vessel had run aground," said Marta Coursey of the Washington State Department of Transportation. "The other serendipitous event was that a Coast Guard inspector was on the Sealth and was able to immediately respond."

The Coast Guard sent a helicopter from Port Angeles and a rescue boat from Bellingham.

Twenty-one people on the Adventuress were evacuated onto the Sealth. No one was hurt.

The schooner was not taking on water, so six crew members stayed on board.

"I don't know the extent of the damage. I know that it was a hard grounding and it was not moveable from its position. We'll have to wait to see if the situation changes at high tide," said Coast Guard Petty Officer Eric Chandler.

The executive director of the Port Townsend group that sails the boat said she expected the boat to float freely when the tide comes in. High tide is at 10:08 p.m. Monday.

The Adventuress was built in Maine in 1913 and came to Seattle in 1952, where it serves as the flagship of Sound Experience, a nonprofit organization that carries more than 3,500 passengers each year on educational expeditions, according to the group's Web site.
