SEATTLE -- The Seattle City Council has unanimously passed a proposal to increase cab fares in the city. The rate hike is connected to soaring gas prices and part of a larger package of cab regulations. After the increase, rides from Seattle to Sea-Tac Airport would rise from $28 to $32, a city representative told KIRO 7 Eyewitness News reporter Jeff Dubois.A 5-mile trip current costs $12.30. Under the new rate, it would be $13.50. For a 25-mile trip, a rider would pay an extra $11.The new rules would eliminate the current $2 surcharge. The City Council will vote on other taxi regulations in coming weeks. The last time the rate changed was in 2005, a rate based on an average price per gallon of $1.90.The new rate is based on a price per gallon of $4.
