SEATTLE -- A wildfire near Mount Adams exploded from 35 acres on Sunday to 3,000 on Monday, covering five square miles of the Gifford Pinchot National Forest.Helicopter video showed the fire burning up trees. Smoke filled the sky over the region. The fire is believed to have been caused by a lightning strike within the past couple of weeks, but just smoldered until it flared up with winds on Sunday. The Cold Spring Fire created a plume of smoke that some people mistook for an eruption of the 12,000-foot volcano. Smoke from the fire was visible in Portland and the Tri-cities area.

The Willow Lakes Fire was reported about 9:20 a.m. Sunday and by 6 p.m. had covered 20,000 acres, or 31 square miles, southeast of Soap Lake, said Gary Garnant, public information officer for the Grant County Department of Emergency Management. The area is undeveloped scrubland, but several outbuildings were destroyed and firefighters were working to protect 10 rural homes that were threatened, Garnant said. The fire spread quickly because of winds Sunday gusting to 20 mph, he said. No cause had been pinpointed, and no injuries were reported. At the Spokane Valley Fire, the evacuation level was reduced Sunday, making it safer for about 200 residents to return home."They're coming in as they feel like it," fire spokesman Dale Warriner said. "They're just going back home."Meanwhile, firefighters continued work to contain the fire, which covered 1,006 acres, or 1 1/2 square miles. It was 60 percent contained, with full containment expected Tuesday.Officials said the fire began Thursday when a small recreational fire rekindled in high winds. The person believed to be responsible had been identified, but the identity was being withheld pending completion of the investigation, fire supervisors said.In other major wildfires in Washington on Sunday, the Badger Mountain wildfire eight miles north of East Wenatchee was up to 14,700 acres, or 23 square miles, with 160 homes under Level 3 evacuation orders, indicating the highest threat. A total of 313 firefighters were on the lines, with the blaze 50 percent contained.A community meeting is scheduled for people affected by the Badger Complex Fire and fire officials will be on hand to answer any questions. The meeting is scheduled to take place Monday at 8 p.m. at the Douglas County Fairgrounds Community Center.Fire management and law enforcement will let us know if the location changes. The Cayuse Mountain wildfire 12 miles east of Tonasket was at 1,768 acres, or 2 3/4 square miles, with containment listed at 60 percent and full containment expected Tuesday.Six homes were threatened and 482 firefighters were on the lines Sunday."Essentially, we're in good shape," said Roland Emetaz of the state Department of Natural Resources. The Abraham Canyon wildfire five miles northwest of Inchelium was listed at 277 acres and 40 percent contained. There were 104 firefighters on the lines. At the Northwest Coordination Center in Portland, Ore., public information officer Paul Ries expressed optimism on Sunday for the fire situation in Washington state for the coming week."The fire crews are pretty positive about getting on all these fires," he said. "Weather conditions are expected to be cooler this week, which will help with any large fire potential."
