Woman Revives Nearly Drowned Girl

A nursing student who took a CPR class last winter saved a girl when she nearly drowned at Lake Samish Park in Bellingham.

Around 12:30 p.m. Thursday, Charity Johnson said a mother approached her, asking if she’d seen her daughter. The mother said her daughter went to the bathroom and had not returned, Johnson said.

As the two women were scanning the lake, they saw the girl floating in the lake, Johnson said. They, along with the help of another woman, brought the girl out.

Johnson told KIRO 7 that when the girl was brought out she was totally white and had blue lips; Johnson thought she was dead.

Johnson said she didn’t think she paid close enough attention when she took a CPR class, but her training kicked in and she was able to revive the girl.

Paramedics arrived at the scene and transported the girl to the hospital.

The age or current condition of the girl is unknown.

No lifeguards are at the lake because of budget cuts, although lifeguards have been there in the past, said Johnson.
