Late Thursday night, family members identified those on board the plane as the pilot, Mark Storer, 51, and his son Brian, 24. The family is from the Burien area.

SLIDESHOW: Float Plane Crash Causes Fiery Scene

The single-engine plane is reported to have hit trees and crashed in a rural area near Lake Nahwatzel, 11 miles west of Shelton, shortly after 3 p.m. Thursday. The plane ignited and caused a fire in the remote, heavily wooded area.

No one else was on the plane.

The Mason County sheriff's office said one person reported seeing a float plane crash into the trees after it took off from a nearby lake.

Skip Kister, who was water skiing in the lake, told KIRO 7 Eyewitness News the plane was in the lake for a while before it tried several take-offs. Kister said when the plane finally took off "it was really struggling." He said he saw it go over the trees before it dropped straight into the woods.

Mason County detective Bill Adam said crews were not able to reach the scene immediately because it's deep in the woods, about 150 yards from the lake.

Helicopters were seen dropping buckets of water over the fire. A bulldozer created a path to the fire and a fire-line so that crews could reach the scene and prevent the fire from spreading. About two acres burned in all, said the Mason County Sheriff’s Office.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is investigating the crash.
