Microsoft Employee Attacked, Badly Injured in Belltown

POSTED: 11:57 pm PDT July 28, 2008
UPDATED: 11:19 am PDT July 29, 2008

What appears to be a random attack in Seattle's Belltown neighborhood has a Microsoft employee fighting to remember what happened, as his family keeps a vigil by his side.

The attack happened on a busy Saturday night at First Avenue and Blanchard Street.

Daniel Stoy's family got the call that he was in a coma, and they immediately flew in from North Dakota.

The 29-year-old's family has spent all their time coming in and out of the intensive care unit since Saturday night.

Four of Stoy's family members are doctors, so they understand better than most the struggle he faces.

And they say at this point, they are happy there is also a priest in the family to say prayers.

Patrick Stoy and his wife got the call late Saturday night: their son, Daniel, was unconscious after a fight.

Patrick remembers the phone call as “pretty awful. That's a terrible call.”

They say someone punched Stoy while he was in the 2200 block of First Avenue.

Patrick Stoy describes his son as, “never one to fight at all. He'd run away from a fight. He's fairly small and doesn't have anything in him that would punch anybody.”

A witness said a group of men attacked the 5-foot-7, 145 pound man. One of them apparently hit Stoy, and Stoy’s head hit the cement. Now, Daniel has skull fractures and bleeding on the brain.

Stoy’s father says this is all new to him, “I've taken care of patients and families like this, but never one of my own. It puts a whole new light on it.”

The younger Stoy was in town for a Microsoft conference. He works for their office in Fargo, North Dakota.

His father – who’s not a computer guy – says he’s not sure what Daniel does, just that he loves what he does.

"He's overcome a bit of a learning disability and attention deficit problems, so to see him succeed is really fun, but to see this happen is really hard," the elder Stoy said.

Seattle police say they have no good description of suspects, and no reason to think this is connected to any other Belltown incidents.

Daniel’s father says, “oh, it's sad, it kind of breaks your heart a little bit.”

Daniel has regained consciousness. He reconigzes his parents, but remembers nothing about Saturday night.

Doctors say it could take two years to figure out how much damage was done to his brain.

Daniel Stoy's family says they're hoping he'll be out of the hospital by the end of the week, back in North Dakota two weeks after that.
