TACOMA, Wash. -- Following two slayings and three shootings, blood banks in Pierce County said they're facing a dangerous shortage of emergency blood supplies.

The two deaths occurred in Tacoma, and in both cases the people who were shot spent time in the hospital undergoing surgery, which can use a lot of the blood bank's supplies.

With three more shootings, the demand for blood depleted the supply.

"This is very, very rare that we would have this many shootings in a short period of time like this," said Dan Schmidt of Cascade Regional Blood Services.

The shootings began on the weekend.

On Friday, a Tacoma police officer shot and injured a man during an altercation. That man later died.

On Saturday, a 14-year-old was shot and wounded in Summit, and in Tacoma, a man was wounded during a shooting at a party.

On Sunday, there were two shootings -- one in Parkland where the victim was also beaten -- and one in Tacoma that left a 49-year-old man dead.

Allison Russell got a call from the blood bank saying they needed her.

"I think it's really cool to be able to just go and donate blood because I'm not using it really, so why not let other people," said Russell.

Schmidt said the last time something like this happened was the Tacoma Mall shooting in November of 2005 when six people were shot and wounded by Dominick Maldonado when he opened fire on holiday shoppers.
