VASHON ISLAND, Wash. -- Anti-Semitic graffiti inside a synagogue has brought Vashon-Islanders together to show their support to the congregation.Community members gathered for a vigil at the Havurat Ee Shalom Friday afternoon as a sign of solidarity against the graffiti and to condemn the person responsible. The graffiti “God hates Jews” alongside a swastika and an attempted swastika were discovered in a wall in the building. The vandal(s) broke a window and got through a small opening into the building. In the days since the graffiti was discovered, yellow and black stars of David have been displayed in Vashon Island store windows and Russian Orthodox Priest Father Tryphon decided to organize the vigil.“What most people here have said is not on our island. That's really our rallying cry about a lot of different issues," said Emma Amiad, a longtime member of the Havurat Ee Shalom congregation.King County sheriff's detectives are trying to find who did it."We think it’s probably kids. It doesn’t make this any less of a serious crime. This is a malicious harassment crime, which is a felony,” said John Urquhart of the King County Sheriff's Department."We cannot let hatred and anti-Semitism happen on Vashon Island so we're gonna stop it right now,” said Russian Orthodox Priest Father Tryphon.Anyone with information on this incident should call the Vashon Island police.
