Bones, Flesh Found In Shoe Confirmed As Human Foot

Posted: 3:52 pm PDT August 4, 2008Updated: 7:05 pm PDT August 4, 2008

Bones and flesh in an athletic shoe found along a northwestern Washington beach are from a human foot, Clallam County authorities confirmed Monday afternoon.

Undersheriff Ron Peregrin said the King County Medical Examiner examined the contents of the right, black athletic shoe and sock, and determined the foot came off naturally after floating in the water.

"We hand-delivered it to the King County Medical Examiner earlier today, and they just confirmed that the remains were determined to be human, not animal," said Peregrin.

The next step for the investigators is to develop a DNA profile to see whether the foot matches feet that washed ashore in British Columbia, which is about 14 miles to the north of where the shoe was found on Friday.

Peregrin said the shoe appears to differ from the other athletic shoes the Canadian authorities found because it is black.

VIDEO: Latest Mystery Foot Confirmed As Human

A woman who had been camping along the windswept shore near Jim Creek about 30 miles west of Port Angeles found a shoe on Friday and reported the discovery on Saturday, the sheriff's office said.

Video from Chopper 7 showed footage of the rugged wilderness and rocky , expansive coastline during low tide in the area where the foot was discovered.

Five severed feet in shoes have been found in the past year in the Vancouver area, but one found in June was a hoax with an animal paw.

Peregrin said his department will meet soon with Canadian police.

"We have a meeting planned for later this week where we'll actually sit down with each other, show them everything that we have, and they'll share everything that they have and see if we have any joint investigation to proceed on," said Peregrin.
