Pacific Police Chief Arrested On Suspicion Of DUI

Posted: 11:43 am PDT August 6, 2008Updated: 10:22 am PDT August 7, 2008

The police chief of Pacific, John Calkins, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence just after 10 p.m. Tuesday in Bonney Lake, said the Pacific Police Department.

The arrest occurred after Bonney Lake police were notified of an alleged drunken driver by a citizen who said they saw a driver heading westbound on state Route 410 heading into Bonney Lake who was veering in and out of his lane, police said.

When officers arrived, they stopped the vehicle on SR 410 and the driver identified himself as the chief of the Pacific Police Department.

“They called me at home, and we discussed our options which were to process him. There were no other options in my mind, so that's what we did,” said Chief Mike Mitchell of the Bonney Lake Police Department. Mitchell went on to say that Calkins refused to do field sobriety tests.

Police said they were also unable to perform a breathalyzer because Calkins has a tracheotomy due to treatment for throat cancer, but investigators said there is enough evidence to refer to prosecutors for charges.

After conducting an investigation, Calkins was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence and was transported to the Bonney Lake Police Department for processing.

Calkins was cited and released after promising to appear in Bonney Lake Municipal Court at a later date.

Pacific Mayor Richard Hildreth said he's waiting to see what happens, before taking action.

“This will be played out in the courts. I personally, from looking at it and talking to him, I think there are some questions there that need to be answered first,” Hildreth said.

The mayor said Calkins called him immediately after he was released and told him what happened. The chief told the mayor he wanted to take time off while this case works its way through the courts.

Calkins has made headlines in the past after one of his officers arrested a man who was considered an illegal immigrant in the U.S. and he said his officers would do that.
