Posted: 3:39 pm PDT August 8, 2008

The man accused of knife-attacking a woman and attempting to rape her pleaded not guilty in court Friday.

Joseph Ryan Smith, 20, is accused of attacking Samantha Shields with a box cutter while she was at a Ferndale ATM July 30, investigators said.

Shields said she tried to give Smith her purse, but he didn't want it. Shields had several cuts on her neck and needed dozens of stitches.

Bank employees heard Shields’ screams and chased off Smith. The entire incident was caught on tape.

Smith is scheduled to make his next court appearance for a pre-trial hearing on September 17.

According to police documents, Smith has a long arrest going back 11 years to when he was nine.
